TOPAMAX SIDE EFFECTS ATTORNEY

A popular drug used to treat epileptic seizures and migraine headaches may increase the risk for a number of congenital birth defects in babies born to mothers who took them while pregnant.

The U. S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) strengthened the Topamax (topiramate) warning to Pregnancy Category D as a direct result of new data that suggests it may increase the risk of congenital birth defects.   Our law firm is handling individual litigation nationwide and currently accepting new Topamax birth defects cases in all 50 states.

Topamax Background

Manufactured by Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceuticals, Topamax (topiramate) is generally prescribed to control both mild attacks known as partial seizures and severe tonic-clonic convulsions known as grand mal seizures.   It is also prescribed for the prevention of migraine headaches, and has been used off-label for a number of other conditions.   Topamax has been prescribed to over 800,000 people since its introduction in the late 1990s.

Topamax Birth Defects

Topamax has been linked to cleft lip, cleft palate, genital malformations (hypospadias), and other severe birth defects.   Women who take Topamax are 20 times more likely to give birth to a child with these defects than women who did not.   Health officials are urging doctors to warn their female patients who may be ready to become pregnant about taking the medicine.

FDA warning on Topamax

On March 4, 2011, the Food and Drug Administration strengthened the warning for patients using Topamax after studies showed that the drug significantly increases the risk of the aforementioned congenital birth defects.   Sadly, many developmental issues may occur in infants born with cleft palates or lips because they are not able to get adequate nutrition.
