Seroquel
Seroquel is a second generation anti-psychotic medication used to treat
psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Seroquel is
manufactured by Astra-Zeneca Pharmaceuticals and was approved by the FDA for
release to the public in 1997.
Common side effects of Seroquel include drowsiness, weight gain,
restlessness, dizziness, increased appetite, constipation and fatigue. More
severe side effects include neuroleptic malignant syndrome, a potentially fatal
syndrome involving muscle rigidity, an altered mental state and symptoms of
cardiac instability; and tardive dyskinesia, a central nervous system disorder
characterized by involuntary movements of the limbs as well as twitching of the
face and tongue.
Recently in September of 2003, the FDA recommended that Seroquel
manufacturers include a diabetes warning because of a study that linked three
out of six anti-psychotic medications to the disorder. According to the study,
Seroquel patients were three times more likely to develop diabetes than those
taking older drugs. On January 30, 2004, AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals wrote a
"Dear Doctor" letter to all healthcare officials prescribing Seroquel advising
them of the Warnings regarding Hyperglycemia and Diabetes Mellitus.
